WSU Boonshoft School of Medicine students to hold canned food drive Saturday, April 17
Students will collect donated items on campus, visit area neighborhoods to support The Foodbank
DAYTON, Ohio-A group of Wright State University medical students is stepping up to help support The Foodbank, Inc., at a time of year when vital donations often wane, making it more difficult for the organization to serve Miami Valley residents in need.
Members of the Boonshoft School of Medicine Phi Rho Sigma community service student organization are organizing a canned food drive for Saturday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The students will be visiting neighborhoods near the Wright State campus beginning Monday, April 12, to hand out flyers and inform residents about the event, and they will return on the 17th to collect donations of non-perishable food items. Donations will also be accepted at a central collection point in front of White Hall, located just off Center Road on the WSU campus.
The Foodbank depends on donations from individuals and businesses in order to support more than 100 charitable food relief organizations throughout Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties. Each day The Foodbank provides an average of more than 6,700 healthy, nutritious meals for local children, families and adults in need. When donations decline, as during seasonal lulls such as early spring, supplies can run low and limit the organization's capacity to provide this critical service.
Dan Persinger, a second-year medical student at Wright State and spokesperson for Phi Rho Sigma, said the need is especially great for items such as peanut butter, pasta and sauces, canned fruit and vegetables, soups, rice, cereal and staples such as flour, sugar and cooking oil. However, the students-and The Foodbank and its partner organizations-will gladly accept any non-perishable food items.
