Kavi Kuchipudi receives award at graduation

Kavi Kuchipudi, '08, receives the Dean's Award from Howard Part, M.D., during the graduation ceremonies at the Boonshoft School of Medicine

Dayton, Ohio-Kavita (Kavi) Kuchipudi is the recipient of the Dean's award, presented annually to one member of the graduating class of Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.

The award is presented to the graduating medical student who demonstrates a commitment to academic excellence, embodies empathy and compassion toward others, exemplifies personal integrity and professionalism, and has earned the respect and trust of classmates and faculty.

"I have always wanted to do something with my life that would help others," Kavi says. She recently returned from a trip to Lima, Peru, where she studied that nation's public health policy and culture, followed by a two-week elective in Ecuador studying ear surgery and disease.

Kuchipudi's hometown is Lima, Ohio. She is the daughter of Drs. Sarat B. and Vijaya Kuchipudi. She holds a B.A. from the University of Dayton, where she graduated summa cum laude and was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society. Kavi also worked as a child life specialist volunteer at Dayton's Children's Medical Center while earning her bachelor degree.

As a medical student Kavi was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society during her junior year and served as its vice-president during her senior year. She served in the Student-to-Student program, volunteered at Reach Out of Montgomery County, organized the Obesity Prevention Program, helped organize "Cover the Uninsured Week," and volunteered at an asthma camp. She also served as past representative and president of her class, served on the honor code committee, the health insurance committee, and as class vice-president during her senior year.

Next month, Kavi begins an otolaryngology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
