Match Day: A Rite of Passage for Graduating Medical Students

Match day 2007DAYTON, OHIO--What do an EMT, an assistant football coach, a nurse, and an All-American hurdler have in common? They are a few of the 90 fourth-year medical students at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, and participated in Match Day-an annual rite of passage when thousands of medical students nationwide learn where they will complete their physician residencies after graduation. High noon, Thursday, March 15, was an hour of excitement and anticipation in the Medical Sciences Auditorium on Wright State's campus.

Depending upon their chosen specialty, students will spend three to five years of advanced clinical training after receiving their M.D. Wright State's fourth-year medical students have interviewed at prestigious residency training programs across the country and ranked their top three choices. Of the students who will receive their M.D. degrees in May, 21% will continue their training in Dayton-area residency programs, and 50% are in residencies in Ohio, with the other 50% in 19 other states and the District of Columbia.
