Know Your Numbers Campaign Receives Grant

Dayton, Ohio -Dayton's Know Your Numbers coalition recently received a $65,000 grant from the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation. The grant will be used to continue the coalition's mass media campaign, which encourages middle-aged women to know their "numbers"-blood pressure, blood sugar, waist size, and cholesterol-and to visit their physician.

The Know Your Numbers coalition was founded in response to the high incidence of cardiovascular disease in the Dayton area. The mission of this local coalition is to teach Miami Valley residents how to live longer, healthier lives by learning to control risk factors for heart disease and stroke, specifically hypertension and high cholesterol, before they become symptomatic. It also encourages individuals to comply with prescribed medical treatments. This unique collaboration of local organizations includes, Wright State University School of Medicine, Pfizer, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, General Motors, Dayton Heart Hospital, the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association, American Heart Association, Montgomery County Combined Health District, PriMed, The Wellness Connection, Miami Valley Health Improvement Council, and WHIO-TV.

"We're honored to be chosen by the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation for this grant," states Richard Schuster, M.D., M.M.M., Boonshoft Chair and Director of the Division of Health Systems Management, Department of Community Health. "We face very high risks in our community for heart attack and stroke. By working with physicians and promoting public education through the Know Your Numbers program, we have successfully begun to reduce those risks in our community. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio's support of this unique community coalition helps us to continue this important work."

The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation, an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, is a private corporate foundation dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of its communities.
