"Untangling the Kinship Care Maze" Conference

DAYTON, OHIO--Wright State's Center for Healthy Communities, the Area Agency on Aging, the Girl Scouts of Buckeye Trails Council, and the Grandparents/Grandchildren Initiative are co-sponsoring a conference for providing information useful to kinship caregivers. "Untangling the Kinship Care Maze: Refining the Systems Response," will be Thursday, May 2, 2002 at the Girl Scouts of Buckeye Trails Council, 450 Shoup Mill Road in Dayton. The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Pre-paid registration is required. The conference fee is $25.00 including lunch. For more information call (937) 775-1114.

Grandparents and other kinship caregivers are raising more than 4 million children across the nation. In Ohio the number is estimated to be more than 167,000, according to a task force report given to the Ohio General Assembly.

Conference participants will have an opportunity to: learn more about developing understanding regarding kinship care families; providing useful information for kinship caregivers; providing available information about community agencies and programs for assisting kinship caregivers; and will offer opportunities for sharing and connecting.

Legacy, the 2001 Academy Award Nominee for best documentary--a film about one family's journey out of poverty--will be featured during the conference. Two of the family members, Dorothy Johnson and Nickole Collins will be discussing, "How Agencies Impact Families."

Other sessions will include: A Caregiver's Story; Embracing Our Global Village; (Grand) Parenting Teens: Not a Christmas Story; Out of Sight But Not Out of Mind: Abandonment Issues; Empowering Caregivers; Dealing with the Born-Addicted Child; and Untangling the Maze with Beverly Williams Odon, Ph.D.

This conference has been approved for 6.0 Ohio Counseling and Social Work CEUs.
