West Dayton Diabetes Day
scheduled November 12

DAYTON, OHIO -- Learning how to live a healthier life with diabetes is the focus of the sixth annual West Dayton Diabetes Day on Thursday, November 12. The free event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Dunbar House State Memorial Museum, located at 219 N. Paul Laurence Dunbar Street, around the corner from Drew Health Center, in Dayton. Honorary co-chairs for this year's West Dayton Diabetes Day are Marsha Bonhart of WDTN TV 2 News and Michael Ecton of WDAO AM 12.10.

West Dayton Diabetes Day offers free health screenings for blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure. People who think they may be at risk for diabetes are urged to get a free health screening. Another popular feature is the Diabetic Soul Food Fest, a free luncheon from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Catered by Singer, the menu this year features black skillet beef with greens and redskins, pumpkin cookie and a diet drink. Prepared and served in portions that meet the diet needs of people with diabetes. Diabetes Day participants who complete four of the scheduled activities will receive free groceries, while supplies last.

West Dayton Diabetes Day also includes information sessions about diabetic education, healthy lifestyles, foot care clinics, glaucoma testing, stress management, neck massage, and community support groups that can help people to manage their diabetes. "The sooner diabetes is detected, the sooner people can begin to make lifestyle changes that will help them live healthier and happier lives with diabetes," says Joy Burgess, director of health promotion programs at the Center for Healthy Communities. "Living with diabetes takes work, but in the long run a healthy lifestyle overall can help to prevent complications of diabetes such as blindness, heart attacks and strokes."

All activities at West Dayton Diabetes Day are free. Advance registration is not required. For more information call 276-8327.

West Dayton Diabetes Day is sponsored by Good Samaritan Hospital, the Center for Healthy Communities, the Diabetes Association of the Dayton Area (DADA), WDAO Radio 12.10 and WDTN TV 2.
