Department of Plastic Surgery

Research Lab

Welcome to the Wright State University Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Research Page. We are dedicated to advancing the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery through our ongoing research efforts. Our projects fall into two categories: basic science and translational research studies, as well as clinical studies, all designed to improve patient care and outcomes.

Basic Science and Translational Research Studies

Within this category, our research covers the following areas:

  • Peripheral Nerve Regeneration: Our focus is on understanding the molecular mechanisms behind nerve regeneration and developing innovative approaches to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration. This is crucial for restoring function in limb salvage. Our research includes both animal and human studies.
  • Skin and Epidermal Regeneration: We aim to create new techniques for wound and burn resurfacing, including methods like culture expansion and single-cell approaches, to facilitate efficient skin and epidermal regeneration.
  • Critical Size Cranial Defect Regeneration: Addressing critical size cranial defects is essential for patients with traumatic injuries or congenital deformities. Our research bridges the gap between laboratory discoveries and clinical applications, including tissue engineering techniques for complex cases.
  • Our research program is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, involving partnerships with multiple institutions to foster an environment where innovative ideas can thrive.

Clinical Studies

Our clinical studies encompass various aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgeries, including:

  • Breast Reconstruction: We investigate outcomes and patient satisfaction following implant-based or autologous breast reconstruction. We maintain a robust patient database to conduct in-depth analyses, ultimately guiding improvements in future approaches. Our research also explores breast and chest wall reinnervation after mastectomy.
  • Burn Reconstruction: As one of the region's largest burn centers for pediatric and adult patients, we explore innovative techniques for burn management during the acute phase and reconstruction to improve outcomes for burn survivors.
  • Microsurgical Reconstruction in Trauma, Burn, and Cancer: Our research aims to perfect reconstruction surgeries by exploring novel techniques and approaches, including the use of chimeric flaps. We conduct meticulous reviews of databases, outcome studies, and case reports to provide innovative solutions for complex cases in trauma, burn, and cancer reconstruction.
  • Craniofacial Reconstruction: We actively engage in the care of rare craniofacial syndromic cases at the international craniofacial center at Shriner's Hospital. Our research focuses on advancing craniofacial reconstruction techniques and improving patient's outcome.
  • Upper Extremity and Hand Surgery: Through collaboration with our orthopedic surgery program, we conduct multiple research studies to enhance outcomes in upper extremity and hand surgery.
  • Aesthetic Surgery and Body Contouring: Our residents have the opportunity to participate in various cosmetic surgeries, both in hospital and private surgical settings. Faculty members welcome residents and medical students to join clinical studies aimed at improving techniques, patient outcomes, and satisfaction.

Involvement of Medical Students

We have a structured plan to engage medical students interested in plastic and reconstructive surgery-related research. Students are paired with a resident and a faculty mentor to guide their research journey. Biweekly meetings with faculty and our Program Director provide opportunities to review project progress and outline future directions.

We look forward to welcoming prospective members and applicants who share our passion for research and innovation in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Together, we are actively shaping the future of healthcare and enhancing the lives of our patients through our dedication to groundbreaking research. Join us in making a significant impact in the world of plastic and reconstructive surgery!
