Welcome
For more than 30 years,
the Wright State University Family Medicine Residency Program has upheld a
commitment to community-based education. The residency combines a rich
tradition of family medicine with exposure to a range of clinical services
seldom found outside academic medical centers. We provide a blend of experiences (patients come from
multiple socioeconomic, racial and ethnic groups) and comprehensive exposure
to a variety of medical disciplines.
The residency program
offers training at two sites — Good Samaritan Hospital and Miami Valley
Hospital, both with independently run family medicine centers. Family medicine
faculty and residents manage busy inpatient services, giving you an excellent
opportunity to integrate family medicine principles as you develop skills in
inpatient care. Residents care for their own group of patients in the Berry Family Health Center and the
Good Samaritan Family Medicine Center, outpatient facilities specifically
designed for the Family Medicine Residency Program.
All faculty members
maintain active patient practices in addition to their teaching duties. Within
the family medicine faculty, residents have immediate access to expertise in
sports medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, psychology, geriatrics, hospitalist
practice and pharmacology. The result is a unique blend: the services and
attitudes seen at community hospitals, and the educational experiences often
available only at university medical centers.
The Wright State
University Boonshoft School of Medicine is nationally known as a leader in
community-based medical education. The Family Medicine Residency Program
participates in teaching the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course,
third-year clerkships, junior internships and electives for the School of
Medicine. Throughout the WSU Family Medicine Residency Program, the resident
plays a significant part in medical students' development. The WSU Departments
of Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatrics and Psychiatry also have residency programs in
our community hospitals.
The WSU Family Medicine Residency Program trains residents
to accept their roles as concerned, competent physicians who function well in
the full realm of family medicine, whether in inpatient or outpatient, rural
or urban settings.
Graduates of our program will achieve the following objectives:
- Technical competence in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad array of illnesses that constitute the majority of health visits to family physicians.
- Growth as an individual in a professional and personal manner.
- Implementation of the biopsychosocial model as a means to understanding and therefore treating the whole patient.
- Ability to care for the individual and the family in a community-responsive manner.
